Pain is pain. You might as well get something out of it.

About a year and a half ago I was going through a challenging time. My process for coping is to pick something physically extreme to train for and pour my energy into achieving it.

Pain is pain. You might as well get something out of it.

But when you are a mom, an extreme adventure has to be within a four hour drive and obtainable within 48 hours because school schedules and soccer practice don’t give a crap about your own personal development.

So I googled “extreme adventures in the Northeast.”

Devil’s Path in Catskills NY popped up. Arguably the most dangerous hiking path on the East coast. 25 miles. 5 summits. 8500 feet of elevation.

And bears.

Oh and I don’t hike.

Perfect! And so I began to train.

I posted pictures of the path all over my workout walls. I mowed the lawn wearing a 15 pound weight vest....and while doing the dishes....because who has time for a formal gym.

But then life happened. Things got busy. And my goal got pushed to the side.

As moms we so often let this happen.

Until two months ago when the ten year old annoyingly said, “when we are you doing that hike? You said you would do it.”

The kid who doesn’t take notice of the overflowing trash can when I point it out, but one unfulfilled goal and he is like Magnum P.I.

Dammit.

I revisited the website. It advised doing the hike before November because it becomes too cold to camp out and is often snow covered.

There was one 48 hour window sandwiched between a soccer game and a board meeting before November.

And now that window is five days away.

So of course I am going to write my way through it!

Stay tuned.....I mean really...what could possibly go wrong?!
